Bouza Tempranillo Tannat Reserve
We’re talking Uruguay here. This is what? The last frontier of wine? Bodega Bouza was born in 1942. They took the French chateau model and went for quality over quantity. They have about 22 hectares of vineyard between two sites. There they grow Albarino, Chardonnay, Merlot, Tempranillo and Tannat. Tannat is Uruguay’s signature grape. Heroically tannic in it’s native town of Madiran (southwest France). Here it takes on a much more charming and altogether pleasing profile.
Today’s one hit wonder is a 2011, 60/40 blend of Tempranillo / Tannat. Aged nine months in French and American oak. It has taken numerous silver and golds in Europe and South America, but nothing here as this USA’s debut vintage.
These guys are serious about their wines. One taste and you’ll know. This liquid is black purple. The aromas are new and tight; sweet wood vanilla, cedar plank, blue-black fruit, licorice, humidity, and leather. The nose hasn’t really developed yet. The mouth is a knock out. It rolls in with rich blackberry-blueberry pie, sweet chewy tannins, viscosity and firm lengthy acids. It’s punchy. Drinks great now and over the next 5 years. In short it’s our kinda wine!

Australia’s Still Rockin! Tasting and Dinner at Suite 100

Dear Oenophile
Negociants USA is one of the most respected Australian and New Zealand importers in the business. On Thursday, Sept 12th, 6:30 pm at Suite 100 Marc Wittenberg our regions sales manager will conduct a tasting of Yalumba, Jim Barry, Langmeil and Ringbolt. Kelly will again prepare his exalted cuisine.
There was a time when Australia was the shining star. The newest and coolest in the world of wine. Then the spot light moved on. Bulk shipments went way up and drowned out the greatness of Australia. Dear Oenophile

There’s going to be a hot time in the old town nextWednesday June 26th 6:30pm as your friends at Anchorage Wine House host Jared and Ali Boyle at the Bay Shore Club House. Jarrod and Ali are living the dream with 267 acres of grapes above the Columbia River in the Horse Heaven Hills area. Jarrod named the winery after his wife Ali and thus Alexandria Nicole Cellars was born. In 2011 Alexandria Nicole Cellars was named Washington Winery of the year and not inconsequentially started distribution in the great state of Alaska!
Jared makes our kind of wine with big aromatics and complex non fruit characteristics and flavors that are hallmarks of killer fruit and wine making skill.
This time we have plenty of seating at rounds of ten in the cozy and comfortable Bay Shore Club House (map).  Tasty treats will be provided by Event Divas of Alaska.
For reservations call Mike at 907 677 9050 or email at mike@anchoragewinehouse.com Costs are $45 per reservation.

2010 Tommasi “Rafael” Valpolicella

Author: Mike  //  Category: Wine
Dear Oenophile
A while back I was tasting through some wines with one of my best suppliers and out comes this Valpolicella from Tommasi. One sniff and I started laughing. “Patrick” I said “This stuff is gonna make me like Italian wine!” It’s true. There’s plenty to love here. The aromas are so engaging. They have this sultry perfume. It’s like dark spice, flowers, anise, fragrant woods it just keeps shifting. The mouth is sweet fruits similar to cherry but darker. It’s dry and there are mild tannin’s and a light delicate body with a finish well into the 30 second range. That said, this is one of the best salmon wines I can recommend. Buck the trend I say. Get out of the Pinot Noir rut. One sip and you’ll be hooked!

St Hallett Gamekeeper’s Shiraz Grenache Touriga

Author: Mike  //  Category: Wine
Dear Oenophile
Ah, now here’s a truly interesting mix. St Hallett’s of course, in Australia’s Barossa Valley cranks out great wines at a great price. This little pup is a blend of 61%, 32% and 7% of the above stated varietals. It’s the Touriga Nacional that perks my interest. It tosses in lovely spice and adds dark tones to the fruit. Touriga Nacional is one of the major components in Port. To wit, the Portuguese are now making some killer dry red out of it. Albeit the tannin levels are heroic. So that’s a challenge. At any rate this is a lovely drop that drinks nicely beyond its price point. Hints of black pepper and supple cherry fruit coat the pallet. Its well fleshed, not tannic and will leave you saying “I’ll have a bit more of that”. After a glass I am sure that you and the Gamekeeper will be good friends.
Avalible at all three locations Huffman, Dimond and Jewell Lake.

Daring Duo Wine & Food Paring Pratick Will of Vintus & Brett Knipmeyer of Kinley’s

Author: Mike  //  Category: Wine

Dear Oenophile
These gentlemen are some of the best in the business. Brett over at Kinley’s is known to most of you. As Chef/Owner he has pushed the boundaries of cuisine in Anchorage. Patrick Will is more behind the scenes. It was his company that first brought Guigal to this country. All of his wineries are artisanal quality, dirt to bottle, family owned estates. Patrick knows the families and has lived in the areas of production. His portfolio is quite simply, amazing! I could rattle on but suffice it to say this is adon’t miss experience. It’s just giving me goose bumps. If that didn’t convince you check out the menu!
Reservations are $95 per person gratuity included. All reservations are to be made through the Anchorage Wine House. Time and date are 6 PM Wednesday on April 3rd. email mike@anchoragewinehouse.com or phone 907 677 9050.
