2008 Chateau Boutisse Saint Emilion Grand Cru

Author: Mike  //  Category: Wine

Shopping for a high quality, fairly priced wine from Bordeaux can be a frustrating experience, and some would say an impossible task. On top of that, stepping outside the well-known Bordeaux chateaus or taking a chance on an “off” vintage takes the guts of a cat burglar. But that only makes the search a bit more satisfying when it pays off.
Enter Chateau Boutisse 2008, one of the top communes in AOC Saint-Emilion. Boutisse 2008 received 90 points from the Wine Spectator and 88 to 90 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Parker says “the 2008 is one of the finest wines I have tasted from Boutisse.” The Spectator says “this is a ripe, fleshy, toasty, modern-style version, boasting rich layers of raspberry ganache, crushed plum and boysenberry fruit, held together by stylish, fine-grained structure.”

Boutisse is relatively large for Saint-Emilion with 23 hectares, mainly planted with Merlot. Huge investments have been poured into the vineyards since 1996 with several parcels of vines being completely replanted.
Now the 2008 vintage was difficult in Bordeaux. Weather was not ideal and producers had to put in long hours of work in the vineyards to be successful. Yields were low and the bad weather continued for most of the summer.
Despite the inconsistencies of the vintage, there were some good values to be found. James Suckling of the Wine Spectator wrote, “even the winemakers themselves in Bordeaux were surprised with the very good quality reds they have been able to produce from 2008. Everyone agreed that the small crop helped them to ripen their grapes enough during the good weather that occurred during much of September and October. “
We were able to lay our hands on a small amount of 2008 Boutisse, which will be delivered to our Huffman store on Friday, September 2nd. With the scores this wine has received, you’re probably bracing yourself for a $50 price tag. Nope, not $50, not $40, not even $30. While supplies last, we are able to offer this remarkable wine for only $27.99.
Supplies are limited so keep in mind, just like summer, it will be gone soon.
